Langdon & Emison represented the plaintiff in Baker v. General Motors, a landmark decision in which for the first time in the country, evidence was admitted into court proving an automaker's deliberate choice of profits over human safety. This evidence, known as the Ivey Memo, detailed a cost-benefit analysis by a GM engineer who concluded that GM could afford to spend $2.25 per vehicle to fix a fire-causing defect, but if the fix would cost any more than that, it would be cheaper for the company to ignore the defect and instead simply pay the wrongful death lawsuits as they came along. This case was litigated all the way to the United States Supreme Court, where a unanimous lineup of all nine justices upheld the victory for the plaintiffs.
