What are Some Mirena IUD Complications?

More than 2 million women in the U.S. have depended on Mirena intrauterine devices (IUD) for birth control and it has been promoted as a safe, long-acting form of birth control; however, women throughout the United States have experienced serious complications with the device, leading to a growing number of lawsuits being filed across the country.

Langdon & Emison is reviewing potential lawsuits for women nationwide who have experienced painful complications associated with the Mirena IUD, including:

  • Perforation of the uterus or migration of the device, resulting in surgical removal.
  • Vision loss.
  • Cranial fluid buildup.
  • Unintended pregnancy resulting in birth defects or injury to the mother.

If you have experienced a problem with the Mirena IUD, contact Langdon & Emison at 866-931-2115 or complete an online form. We will review your potential claim and no cost or obligation to you.

What is Potentially Dangerous About the Mirena IUD?

The Mirena IUD is implanted into the uterus within the first seven days of menstruation. The device then releases levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestogen, directly into the uterus to prevent pregnancy.

If the physician did not insert the device correctly, the lining of the cervix can be perforated. The IUD also can migrate to other parts of the body, sometimes puncturing the abdomen and causing damage to major organs.

In addition, Mirena IUDs can become embedded in other parts of the body and cause infections that can be potentially fatal such as Group A streptococcal sepsis.

What Symptoms are Associated with the Mirena IUD?

Common symptoms associated with the Mirena IUD include:

  • Urinary tract infections.
  • Abdominal or pelvic pain – often severe.
  • Bloody urine.
  • Heavy spotting or bleeding.
  • Birth defects or injury to the mother from an unintended pregnancy while the IUD was implanted.

Also, if you are unable to locate the strings on your Mirena IUD, you should contact a physician right away.

Why are Mirena IUD Lawsuits Being Filed Across the United States?

According to allegations raised in Mirena injury lawsuits filed in courts throughout the country, Bayer Corporation sold the Mirena IUD without providing adequate warnings and information about the risk of serious complications associated with the device.
