Toyota Recalls 6.5M Vehicles Worldwide Over Fire Risks

Toyota is recalling 6.5 million vehicles worldwide, including 2 million in the United States, to fix a defect in the driver’s side window switch that can lead to a fire.

The recall includes some of the automaker’s most popular vehicles, with model years ranging from 2007 to 2011.

Toyota said the window switch may have been manufactured without enough lubricant grease, which could short circuit, overheat and melt, causing a fire. The defect has been linked to 11 incidents in which the switch or car door burned, including one case in which a U.S. motorist reported a hand burn, Toyota said.

The U.S. models affected by the recall include:

  • 2009 to 2011 Corolla, Matrix, Sequoia, Tundra and Scion xB.
  • 2008 to 2011 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.
  • 2006 to 2011 RAV4.
  • 2006 to 2010 Yaris
  • 2009 to 2010 Scion xD.
  • 2007 and 2009 Camry and Camry Hybrid.
