VW and Audi Diesel Car Owners Seek Compensation Amid Emissions Scandal

Environmentally conscious consumers who bought Volkswagen and Audi cars equipped with “clean diesel” technology have vehicles that are anything but clean.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently announced that nearly 500,000 VW and Audi diesel cars sold in the U.S. since 2009 emit noxious pollutants up to 40 times the legal limit allowed under federal and state laws. In the U.S., the following seven models are equipped with the affected engine type:

  • Jetta, 2009-2015
  • Beetle and Beetle Convertible, 2012-2015
  • Passat, 2012-2015
  • Audi, 2010-2015
  • Jetta SportsWagen, 2009-2014
  • Golf, 2010-2015
  • Golf SportsWagen, 2015

According to multiple media reports, affected vehicles are equipped with software that senses when the car is being tested and then activates equipment that reduces emissions. The software turns the equipment off during regular driving, increasing emissions far above legal limits, The New York Times reported.

The EPA has said it will order Volkswagen to recall all American car models affected by the defect.

Lawsuits across the country are seeking compensation for people who purchased or leased the recalled diesel cars.
